300 words for the summary of the course

ARCH1142 Communication 1 is a flexible course. It allows me to choose which areas I am interested or would like to improve. In five workshops, I took Material Modeling, Drawing Workshop and Fluid Thoughts to Actions. In Material Modeling, I learnt some useful modelling skills and tecniques. It also provided a chance to do presentation through the collage. In addition, after doing collage, it gave me one more effective architectural presentation methods in the future. In Drawing Workshop, through the tutorials, I got a chance to look through different architects' drawings which allowed me to think deeply on the composition of drawing. It also let me know the importance of the manual drafting which is one of the architect's significant skill. During the class drawings, it could urge me on drawing with accuracy and high speed. Lastly, in Fluid Thoughts to Actions, it allows me to have further chance to do the hand drawing. Through this workshop, I got a brief idea on how to use the charcol to express the depth, lighting effect and materials of the space. Through lots of home charcol exercise, it built me confidence to draw with charcol.

After each workshop, the feedbacks are really useful and important to me which can allow me to know which part I should improve in the future. Moreover, the skills learned in each workshops are inter-related. I can apply what I learned in previous workshop in next one. For example, how to draw and look the building in acurate can be learnt in Drawing Workshop. This techquie is specially useful in Fluid Thoughts to Actions because there is necessary accurate observation before applying any charcol drawing skills.

In conclusion, I believe those skills and techniques are very important in my career as an architect.

Material Modeling

In this workshop, several models were to made to improve the crafting techniques.
In my final model, the place I chose to rebuilt is the "6 1/2 th Floor", where is a stair area between 6th floor and the top floor. I chose this place because it is a quiet place that there are not many people to know that place and have a good view from the large glass window. I would like to introduce this amazing place to all people. The above model is the draft model for the first presentation about intoducing that place.

This pictures is the first time to do the collage. It show the depth and internal situation of the place.

This picture is a much mature collage after several trial. It can completely show the internal area.

These are the overall view of the re-built model. I also use the photo took from the large window as the back ground of the model. Then people can really experience view they can see. In my re-built model, I expand the original areas. The areas are divided into external and internal areas. One has the roof and another is open area, so that people can use this place even in raining day. In addition, the random squares of the buildings can allow people to view outside in different views.

The above three pictures are using the human eye's view, so that people can understand the human scale.

Lastly, the collage is composed by the elevation, actual internal areas and model with some brief decription.

Drawing Workshop

In this workshop, there were several in-class drawing exercises.

The drawings of tea cup is mainly show the relationship among plan, section and elevation with light shadow.

This 3D draing mainly focus on the building's detail, so the bricks on the left wall is clear shown. Because sunlight is assumed to come from right hand side, the bricks on right wall is blur and not in detail. In addition, the people and tree can show the depth of the whole drawing, so that the 3D effect is more obvious.

This drawing focus on the shadow of different objects.

This one is the shadow exercise.

The above two images were the mockup of my final drawing project. Before doing the final project, I tried to use different compositions.

This image is about the trees drawn in different ways and pen or pencil.

This image is about the idea developing process.
For the final drawing project, I used a cartoon method to present the regular shape of the Mario Botta House. In order to achieve this goal, a thick pen, 0.4, is used to draw the whole drawing so that it will be much interesting and clear.

For the composition, one line is used to connect all the pictures from internal detail , elevation, section and plan. For the black colour of the trees, it acted as tone to seperate the elevation and sections. However, in order to avoid the black colour too sharp. The black colour is coloured on the back of the tracing paper.

Fluid Thoughts to Actions

In this workshop, the main tool is charcol. Through a large number of drawing exercises, different skills and techniques on charcol drawing are explored.

This drawings was composited by two different views of the Opera House. After the first view of drawing, another one was drawn overlapping directly. For the first view, there was shadows. The drawing approach was drawing waht I saw. In the contrast, the second view was just drawn by lining. Itcan avoid the two different views mixed in confusing, but they still were expressed the their particular views.

This drawing was also a part of the Opera House. It mainly showed the facade. The above drawings are drawn in the first lesson and in fornt of the Opera House.

This drawings was similar to the first one. There were two drawings drawn overlapped. However, in this time, I tried to use a new approch to compose two views. In the second views, I use eraser to erase the overlap parts of two views. This method made the drawing much interesting.

This drawing was also similar to the previous one, but the two views are overall and detail.
The last drawing was base on decription of groupmate.
The description is
:
Filtered light that streams across the floor.Plush rose coloured carpet floor.Ceiling meets at a peak.Pastel, soft, warm, cosy atmosphere.Panelled walls.Wicker-basket chairs + a bed that can be rolled around on wheels.

This collage is base on four different interior views's drawing in Red Centre. Our group chose some parts of the drawing as base. Then we continued to draw on them and edited as a new drawing about the space. In this collage, it mainly shows the depth of the space.
